Not all clothes require the same cleaning routine. Unless your closet consists of identical materials, it’s crucial to know how frequently you should clean the different textiles to avoid damaging your favorite pieces. This guide highlights when to bring certain items to the laundromat.

How to Wash Specific Types of Clothing

Underwear, socks, and undershirts come into close contact with your skin. After every use, throwing them in the laundry will remove the sweat, oils, and bacteria the items have likely picked up. This tactic ensures they're sanitary the next time you put them on. Bras and lingerie are a little different. While they sit close to the skin, you can usually wear them three to four times between washings.

In general, you can wear most tops up to two times before they need washing. However, whenever a piece is soiled, put it in the laundry immediately. Letting dirt and stains sit for too long can cause the spots to become permanent or lead to premature fiber wear. Unless you're a sweaty sleeper, you can wear pajamas two to three times between cleanings. Workout clothes, however, should be thrown in the laundry after each session.

Dress pants and slacks made out of cotton or wool blends attract body oil much faster than jeans. As such, you can wear them two to three times before taking them to the laundromat. Since jeans are thicker and less likely to absorb sweat, they can usually be worn five or six times before reaching their limit.

How to Follow Best Practices at the Laundromat

When dividing up your loads, it’s best to sort out similar materials. Keeping these items together will prevent them from prematurely deteriorating due to excess friction created by opposing fabrics.

Place more delicate items in individual mesh bags that are meant for washing machines. This tactic provides extra protection when multiple pieces are cleaned together. When possible, use machines that have a “delicate” setting. Additionally, follow the instructions listed on each clothing item’s tag. For example, don’t wash a piece that requires cold water and low dry heat with one that needs warm water and high heat.
