There are tons of specialized treatments that can improve the look and feel of skin, from chemical face peels to Botox. However, patients can also make small shifts in their daily life to care for their skin long term. Here are a few habits to address.

What Lifestyle Changes Can I Make to Improve My Skin?

1. Diet

Your skin draws vitamins, minerals, and nutrients from the food you eat. A balanced diet full of whole foods like vegetables, fruit, beans, fish, and nuts can contribute to firm, plump skin. Specifically, get lots of healthy fats from salmon and avocado, vitamin A from peppers and sweet potatoes, vitamin C from leafy vegetables and citrus, and zinc and vitamin E from nuts and beans.

2. Exercise

Exercise increases blood flow throughout the body, sending oxygen to repair muscles and other tissues – including the skin. Blood also delivers nutrients and carries free radicals and toxins away from the skin, removing it from the body through the lymphatic system. Just be sure to wash away sweat to prevent clogging pores after a workout.

3. Hydration

Skin contains moisture to plump the skin and improve elasticity. Dry skin is more likely to crack and show blemishes. In addition to drinking water throughout the day, enjoy hydrating food like watermelon and cucumber, and limit dehydrating food and drinks like alcohol, caffeine, and salty snacks.

4. Stress

Stress triggers various chemical processes in the brain, which can increase inflammation throughout the body. In the skin, this translates to puffiness, increased redness, and acne. Addressing stressful situations, practicing meditation, and finding enjoyable hobbies can limit daily stress.
