The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends flossing your teeth at least once a day. While dentists stress that any time is sufficient so long as you actually floss, many prefer to do so at the end of the day after they’ve had all their meals. This way, you can be certain that you’ve eliminated all of the food particles from your mouth. 

What’s the best kind to use?

There are several types of interdental cleaning products. Dental floss is a standard product consisting of flexible string that’s designed to slip between the teeth. Floss picks, by contrast, feature pre-strung strands designed for insertion between your teeth. 

Dentists may recommend the latter because they’re easier to use. However, all varieties do a sufficient job of eliminating plaque. 

Is there a right way to floss?

If you’re using standard string floss, grip an 18-inch strand and wind the majority of it around your middle finger. Wrap the rest around the middle finger on your other hand. Using your thumbs and forefingers, grip the floss and guide it between your teeth. 

Create a “C” formation as you run the string against the sides of your teeth, moving it up and down instead of back and forth. Avoid moving vigorously; take your time and floss between all of your teeth.
