The leaves are changing colors, and the days are getting shorter, so you should start preparing for the heating season.  You can stay warm all winter by asking an HVAC contractor to inspect and maintain your heating system. However, you can get started on your own by following these simple maintenance tasks.

How to Maintain Your HVAC Equipment During Fall

1. Replace the Air Filter

Dirty filters prevent air from flowing into the furnace, forcing the unit to work harder. This increases energy costs and wear and tear on the unit and can affect the air quality inside your home.

Plan to change the filter every 60 to 90 days or more frequently if you have smokers, pets, or people with allergies in your home. If you aren't sure how to change the filter or how often it should be changed, ask an HVAC contractor for help.

2. Check the Vents

Although you may have heard that closing registers or vents in unused rooms can reduce heating costs, doing so can actually harm the HVAC system. Closing vents causes the system to work harder and increases pressure inside the ducts.

Eventually, the ductwork may leak, and the HVAC unit might overheat as it works harder to accommodate the lost air. Check all of the vents in the fall to make sure they're open. Now is also a good time to clean them to preserve good indoor air quality. Wipe down the register covers, and vacuum inside the vents to remove any accumulated dust or debris.

3. Block Drafts

Any time cold air gets inside due to leaks around doors and windows, your heating equipment has to work harder and use more energy. Before turning on the heat, check the windows and exterior doors for drafts. Hold your hand near any gaps or cracks to see if you feel air coming through the openings.

If you find any leaks, seal them with weatherstripping or fresh caulk. It's also recommended to invest in insulating drapes and door draft stoppers to keep cold air outside.

4. Clean the Outdoor Unit

When leaves, twigs, and other debris accumulate around an outdoor HVAC unit, they can restrict airflow, reduce efficiency, and even damage the equipment if they get inside. Throughout fall, clear the area surrounding the outside HVAC unit of leaves, branches, and other debris. Consider placing a durable cover over the equipment to protect it from the elements.
