A bone graft is a type of restorative dental service where natural or synthetic bone is used to add density and volume to the jaw. Once attached, it stimulates regeneration in existing jawbone tissue, causing bone cells to build around the graft. Though not an everyday procedure, there are several reasons this procedure might be needed to contribute to optimal oral health.

When Will a Dentist Recommend a Bone Graft?

1. Existing Tooth Preservation

Advanced gum disease breaks down bone as well as gum tissue. Bone grafting restores the jawbone to provide a supportive foundation for teeth, which helps prevent them from loosening and falling out.

Combining the restorative dental service with other methods for preventing advanced gum disease, such as twice-daily brushing for two minutes twice a day, flossing once daily, and seeing your dentist as needed for deep teeth cleanings, provides an effective treatment regimen.

2. Dental Implant Preparation

Dental implants offer permanent replacements for missing teeth. Sometimes, there is not sufficient bone tissue to support them, so the jawbone must be grafted and allowed to heal first. Once there is enough tissue to provide a strong foundation, the dentist can insert titanium screws, which serve as tooth roots, into the gums.

The screws take about six months to heal, after which the dentist affixes the abutments and dental caps, or crowns. The abutments provide the connection between the screws and caps, and the caps look and function like real teeth.

3. Bone Loss Prevention After Tooth Extraction

Since jawbone reabsorption happens relatively quickly following tooth extraction, bone grafts provide preventive benefits. Small grafts are used to maintain and strengthen existing bone tissue, providing a foundation for dental implants and other tooth replacement options, including fixed dental bridges and partial dentures. If the patient wishes to decline tooth replacement, the jawbone will still need to be strengthened along the gap to prevent tissue loss.
