Herniated discs occur when the softer material inside a spinal disc pushes through the tough exterior. If left untreated, a herniated disc can cause persistent back pain, constant discomfort, and even loss of mobility. Below are a few common signs that you should see a chiropractor about a possible herniated disc.

Signs of a Herniated Disc

1. Intense Back Pain

Intense back or neck pain is one of the most obvious signs of a herniated disc. For most people, pain typically originates in the lower back and can radiate down into the buttocks, legs, and even the feet. When the herniated disc is in the neck, the pain can radiate to the upper back between shoulder blades or down the arms to hands.

These unpleasant sensations are caused by the bulging disc putting pressure on the nerves, causing pain along their pathways. The pain may be sharp, throbbing, or aching, and it can be aggravated by movements such as bending, lifting, or sitting for prolonged periods.

2. Numbness or Tingling

In addition to pain, pressure on the nerves can disrupt normal sensory signals, leading to constant numbness and tingling. You may experience a "pins and needles" feeling or a lack of sensation in specific areas. This symptom is often accompanied by weakness in the affected limb.

3. Muscle Weakness

When the nerves responsible for controlling specific muscle groups are compressed, you may experience weakness or find it difficult to perform certain movements, such as lifting objects or walking. Muscle weakness is often accompanied by a loss of coordination or balance.

4. Shooting Pain

A herniated disc in the lower back can cause shooting pain that travels down the buttocks and legs. This type of pain is often referred to as sciatica, because it’s caused by the irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. A herniated disc in the neck can cause similar symptoms but is referred to as cervical radiculopathy.

These shooting pains can be intense and debilitating enough to make carrying out daily activities challenging. It may worsen with certain movements or prolonged periods of sitting or standing.

5. Limited Range of Motion

A herniated disc can also cause structural changes and inflammation that limit the range of motion in your back and spine, making it difficult to bend, twist, or turn comfortably. Everyday tasks like tying your shoes or reaching for objects may become challenging.
