As the temperatures drop and your family prepares to bundle up indoors for the winter, it’s wise to get your RV ready for the coming chill. Winterizing the RV will prevent damage and avoid expensive repairs. With the right RV accessories and a few simple steps, your vehicle will be in top shape for use in the spring. The guide below will help you prepare the recreational vehicle for winter storage.

How to Winterize an RV

How to Prevent Freezing Pipes

The RV has a plumbing system that is susceptible to freezing and bursting during the winter. If the vehicle will be stored outdoors, it's best to protect the pipes. Non-toxic RV antifreeze, which you can find at an RV accessories shop, is the best tool for the job.

Start by removing and bypassing any inline water filters to avoid damaging them with the antifreeze. Drain the black and gray water tanks, then clean the black tank with a specialized cleaner or cleaning wand. Completely drain the freshwater holding tank and water heater. Remember to shut the water heater off first and wait until it is cool and no longer under pressure. To ensure any excess water is released, open all faucets on your RV and flush the toilet.

You’ll also need to bypass the water heater to keep antifreeze from getting in. Most RVs come with a bypass already installed, but if yours doesn’t, you can pick one up from an RV parts store. Install a water pump converter kit, then place the tube in the antifreeze jug and turn the pump on.

Carefully open the hot and cold valves until antifreeze appears, starting with the closest faucet. Turn the water pump off, then open all faucets to relieve pressure. Pour a cup of antifreeze down each sink and drain and two cups down the toilet. Flush the toilet and close all faucets.

What to Do Inside the RV

Small animals seeking warmth and food may try to take shelter in the RV. To keep it free of critters, remove all food, clothes, and linens from the interior. Clean the refrigerator and food cabinets, then leave them open to air out lingering odors. Tightly shut windows and doors to the RV and plug the exhaust pipe with steel wool. Make sure all seams and seals are secure.

Extra Steps to Take for Motorized RVs

For motorized RVs, you’ll need to take a few extra steps. Top off your transmission, brake, steering, and windshield fluids, as well as engine oil and gas to prevent the buildup of moisture. Look for fluid leaks and have them repaired before storage. Check that all RV appliances and parts are functioning properly, including the refrigerator, generator, air conditioner, and smoke alarm.
