Whether or not you plan to use your utility trailer this winter, some routine upkeep and preventive maintenance will ensure it withstands the cold, snow, and ice that are surely in store. Fortunately, there are easy steps you can take to protect your trailer and trailer parts from wintertime damage. Here are a few ways to maintain your trailer this winter.

A Brief Guide to Utility Trailer Maintenance in Winter

1. Inspect the Tires

Cold temperatures cause tire pressure to drop. If your trailer's tires are already under inflated, there's a risk they'll be flat in a short time. There's also the possibility the tires could lose just enough pressure to affect the weight capacity of your trailer, so when you go to use it, it can't support the load size it normally does. This can lead to blowouts, axle damage, and other issues. Avoid these hassles by checking the pressure with a tire gauge, confirming it matches the recommended psi printed on the sidewalls; add air as necessary. You should also inspect the condition of your tires; inspect for weather checking (cracks).

2. Lubricate Trailer Parts

In cold weather, lubricants become more viscous, which means they can't grease moving parts as effectively. This can increase friction and reduce performance when you go to use your utility trailer. Whether you'll be storing or using it this winter, take the time to apply a spray-on lubricant to all moving trailer parts to help them perform better in the cold. This includes hinges, hitches and their components, and locks.

3. Store It Wisely

If you're not planning on needing the utility trailer until spring, you'll want to store it in a safe, secure location that is both cool and dry. A garage or other outbuilding is ideal, but you can also store it outside if needed. Just be sure to take some extra precautions, like parking it on a paved surface to prevent tire damage and covering it with a weather-resistant tarp to protect it from the wintertime brunt of Mother Nature. Also, cover tires to prevent weather checking, the sun will cause more damage when exposed.
