Reckless driving puts many lives in danger and is viewed as a serious violation across the country. It’s typically charged as a misdemeanor rather than an infraction, which can result in significant consequences. While this remains true in Missouri, the state’s traffic laws are unique when it comes to this offense. Here’s what you should know if you’re facing such charges.

What Is Considered Reckless Driving in Missouri?

reckless driving

Unlike most states, Missouri doesn’t have a specific statute that addresses reckless driving. Instead, the law prohibits drivers from operating vehicles in a careless and imprudent manner. It also stipulates that motorists must exercise the highest degree of care while behind the wheel and drive at speeds that don't endanger others.

Since there isn’t a clear definition of what constitutes careless and imprudent driving, police officers generally use their discretion when setting charges. However, some common examples of reckless driving include excessive speeding, texting and driving, racing, weaving in and out of traffic, passing another vehicle unsafely, and trying to evade law enforcement.

What Are the Penalties?

Careless and imprudent driving offenses are categorized as Class B misdemeanors, which are punishable with fines of up to $500 and up to six months in jail.

A charge can be upgraded to a Class A misdemeanor when it causes an accident that involves bodily injury or considerable property damage. Penalties for this include a fine of up to $1,000 and up to one year of incarceration. Depending on the severity of the charge, these violations can result in automatic license suspensions.
