Although car maintenance should be a priority throughout the year, the specific needs of your vehicle can change based on the season. During the summer, the heat can affect many different components of your car. Luckily, here are a few tips to avoid car malfunctions and the need for emergency help at a vehicle service center

How to Care for Your Car This Summer

1. Check Tire Tread and Pressure

Contact with the hot pavement can cause tire rubber to deteriorate. To check tread depth, put a penny head-first into the grooves of the tread. If Lincoln's head doesn't completely disappear, it means the tread depth is no longer deep enough to provide traction. In this case, consider tire replacement. Summer models are made with rubber that won't soften when exposed to heat. You should also make sure tire pressure is set to the manufacturer recommendations, as rising temperatures can cause the pressure to rise to the point the tire could rupture.

2. Keep the Battery Cool

Summer heat can cause the liquids inside a vehicle's battery to evaporate. When this happens, the battery can't maintain its charge. High temperatures also accelerate the chemical reactions inside the battery, which can cause internal components to corrode faster. To avoid these problems, park your car in the garage, in the shadow of a building, or under tree covering to help the battery stay cool.

3. Care for the AC System

Have professionals at a vehicle service center replace the air filter at the start of summer. This way, dirty air won't blow into the cabin from the air conditioner while you're driving. Technicians will also flush and replace the old refrigerant to prevent contaminants from corroding the air conditioning parts.
