A used car offers a number of advantages, including a verifiable vehicle history, comprehensive professional inspections, and, of course, a lower price tag. To be sure you're investing in a quality vehicle, it's important to ask the dealership the right questions before you buy. Here are a few of the most crucial questions to ask.

How Many Owners Has the Car Had?

In general, the fewer owners a used car has had, the greater the likelihood that it will be a dependable vehicle. But that doesn't mean you should be turned off by a vehicle that has had more than one or two prior owners. If each owner had the vehicle for three or more years at a time, there's still a very good chance the car is reliable and has been well maintained. But pay attention to mileage as well. If the miles are still relatively low but the list of previous owners is long, there may be some issues present that require further investigation.

Has the Car Been in Any Accidents?

An accident history is no reason to immediately dismiss a used vehicle. Automotive technology has advanced to the point that many damaged vehicles can be restored to near-new condition. But, of course, some accidents are more major than others, and having an idea of accident history can tell you about the vehicle systems that may have been affected and might present problems in the future. You can find some of this information in the car history report, but not all accidents, especially minor ones, are reported. So, ask the dealer if they're aware of any prior accidents and the effects of those crashes.

Are All Features Working Correctly?

You can't expect a used car to be in showroom-new condition. However, the major features of the vehicle should still be in reliable working order. Confirm this with the dealer before you buy. If there is a minor feature that isn't as pristine as it once was, like a broken CD player or light paint wear, the car is likely still a worthy investment.
