Crime rates may have been dropping for the past few years, but some cities in Connecticut have seen an uptick in juvenile offenses. In addition to increased rates of car theft and shoplifting, police and bail agents are concerned about home break-ins and other crimes. Minors who are convicted of a larceny-related crime face consequences that could affect the rest of their lives.

Increased Juvenile Crime Rates in New Haven

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, schools across the state were closed through much of 2020. Without the structure provided by in-person classes and after-school classes, many young people are making poor decisions.

New Haven police have reported higher incidences of auto robberies, theft, and shoplifting. Minors as young as 12 have been arrested for stealing vehicles, many of which have been used in other crimes. Officials have become so concerned that the state is spending $125,000 to resolve the issues that contribute to sudden spikes in crime.

Consequences of Juvenile Larceny Charges

Juveniles convicted of minor larcenies may face less serious consequences than adults charged with similar crimes. Defendants under the age of 18 who have never been accused of a crime before may be ordered to attend counseling or perform community service in lieu of jail sentences and fines. They’ll also usually be released to their parents’ custody instead of waiting for their court dates in jail.

However, if your child is accused of stealing items worth more than $5,000, they may be charged with 1st or 2nd-degree larceny. These charges carry more severe penalties, potentially including incarceration and expensive fines. In serious cases, they may also be held in state custody until you or a bail agent can secure their release.

Juvenile Correction Institutions like the Manson Youth located at 42 Jarvis St. in Cheshire CT was home to about 300 boys and young men between the ages of 15 and 21 in 2019. In order to be sent there, the young people must have committed, or be accused of, a crime serious enough to land them in the adult criminal justice system. However, the most recent CT Mirror News article shares that the number of sentenced and presentenced juveniles sent to Manson before their 18th birthdays has dropped dramatically over the last decade.
