Every trucker with a customized rig loves a bright, shiny bumper, but which metal finish should you choose: stainless steel or chrome? Both have their strengths and weaknesses, so it really comes down to your own priorities regarding cost, durability, and looks.

Texas Chrome Shop, San Antonio’s premier truck shop, would like to point out the differences to help you make the right choice for your rig:

Chrome

  • Chrome parts are usually cheaper than stainless steel, because just the surface is actually polished chrome.
  • Polishing can work up a much brighter finish than you can achieve with steel.
  • Chrome is susceptible to rust, especially if part of the coating comes off. Corrosion will eat its way through the inside, causing the chrome to flake off in a very unattractive manner. Chrome plating also might not do well in a coastal area where there's a lot of salt in the air.

Stainless Steel

  • Stainless steel is prized in a variety of applications because it is impervious to rust and corrosion.
  • Over time, however, the bright finish will take on a distressed look, which a lot of people actually find attractive. You can buy pre-distressed stainless steel bumpers if you like the look, or get the part refinished if you don’t.

Neither option is truly better than the other, and both are extremely popular. You’ll find literally hundreds of bumpers available with both finishes. Texas Chrome Shop is proud to offer a huge selection of chrome bumpers and other truck accessories to fit almost any make, so stop by the website to take a look, or call (210) 622-5757 to talk about the difference between chrome and steel.
