Whether you’re going out of town or want to free up room in your driveway, moving a vehicle to storage is an excellent way to protect it. While it's a relatively hands-off process, long-term storage does require preparation. Make sure your car is ready to go whenever you need it by following these three steps.

A Guide to Long-Term Storage for Cars

1. Clean the Vehicle

Wash and vacuum your car thoroughly before storing it. Any substance on the exterior can eat away the paint and metal, while food or trash on the inside will attract pests. If the vehicle storage is outdoors, cover it with a secure tarp to protect the finish.

2. Use a Jack

long-term storageOne of the most common consequences of long-term storage is tire damage. When a vehicle maintains the same position for an extended period, the weight doesn’t disperse evenly. As a result, the tires develop flat spots, which can ruin them. To avoid this issue, jack the car up high enough that the tires aren't touching the ground. You can go further and take the wheels off altogether and store them in the trunk or storage unit until you're ready to drive.

3. Refill Fluids

Even though they won't be in use while in storage, the mechanical aspects of the vehicle also need attention. Firstly, change and fill the oil. This step prevents any contaminants left from regular operations from damaging the engine. Next, fill the gas tank to prevent moisture buildup—and rust—in the tank. Add a liquid stabilizer to maintain the quality of the fuel.
