Modern vehicles typically feature computers that control many auto processes. However, like all auto parts, the vehicle computer can experience wear or other problems that affect its ability to function normally. When this occurs, a transmission reflash can be the solution. Learn about this type of transmission service and why it is important below.

What is a Transmission Reflash?

What It Does

A reflash provides your vehicle’s computer with an upgrade and takes about 30 minutes to complete. As previously mentioned, such upgrades can be necessary because of general wear and tear, but also because of issues like computer “bugs.” Reflashing, or recalibrating, is typically enough to solve the issue and provide your vehicle with a like-new computer. “Transmission reflash” and “reflash” are often used interchangeably because the automatic transmission is often the part causing computer issues. It communicates with the computer via solenoids and sensors, but can cause problems such as slipping, faulty shifting, and shift flares. When these issues occur, it means the transmission’s clutches and bands have worn down and the auto part cannot “talk” to the computer effectively.

Other Auto Part Issues Calling For a Transmission Reflash

Other vehicle part issues indicate the need for a transmission reflash. Common related signs include a quick-draining battery, burning oil issues, carbon buildup if the engine is direct-injection, and uneven brake wear. You might also notice problems such as poor ABS performance and ongoing P0420 Efficiency code warnings.

For example, say your motor oil level is low on a regular basis despite no leaks being found. A reflash can easily solve this issue, assuming your vehicle features cylinder deactivation. Reflashing adjusts the valve timing, eliminating severe vacuum issues from the combustion stroke. As a result, less oil is “vacuumed” into the piston rings to keep the oil level reasonable.
