4 Tips for Packing Up a Printer for a Move
Office printers seem like heavy, durable devices, but they have dozens of moving parts and sensitive electronics that can be easily damaged during a move. If you’re relocating your business, improperly packing your printer can cause printhead misalignments and other irritating issues that can impact its function and reliability. Below are a few tips for preventing printer repairs after a move.
How to Protect Your Printer During a Move
1. Remove the Ink Cartridges
The printer will likely get tipped and shifted around during transit, which can spill ink inside the cartridges. Not only can this ruin furniture, files, and other valuable property, but liquid ink can also damage the circuit boards that power the printer. Before moving the device, remove the ink cartridges and put them in their original packaging or a plastic zipper bag.
2. Find the Right Packaging
Using the original packaging is the best way to protect the printer, especially if you still have the styrofoam inserts. However, if it’s been lost or thrown away, find a sturdy cardboard box that leaves at least four inches of space around the printer. As an extra precaution, double-tape the bottom of the box to keep it from opening during transit.
3. Bag Up the Cables
Losing cables is one of the most common issues you’ll encounter during a move. To make setting up the printer in your new location easier, put all of the cables, wires, and other accessories in a plastic bag. Clearly label the container as “printer parts” so you can easily find it when unpacking.
4. Bubble Wrap the Entire Printer
A coating of bubble wrap will help prevent damage and avoidable printer repairs. Completely wrap the device in bubble wrap, and be sure not to leave any cover or surface unprotected. Fill any remaining spaces inside the box with leftover bubble wrap to keep the printer from shifting during the move.
