Whether you're traveling for business or pleasure, a laptop makes it easier to get your work done, stay connected, and research local hotspots and attractions. But laptops are still susceptible to damage. To protect your device and data, and to prevent premature laptop repairs, here are several tips for keeping your computer safe when traveling.

How to Protect Your Laptop While Traveling

1. Use an Appropriate Bag

Choose a bag that has some built-in padding, like a thickly cushioned backpack or carry-on bag. You could also carry it in a briefcase, but because briefcases don't usually have a lot of padding, be sure to wrap the device in a towel, thick cloth, or even a length of bubble wrap to protect it. Make sure that the laptop has a protective case to prevent scratches or broken screens.

2. Secure It

Taking your eyes off the laptop for even a few seconds can be disastrous, as it can easily be misplaced or even stolen. Throughout all legs of the journey, carry the laptop with you in its bag. Don't risk loss, damage, or theft by putting it in checked baggage. If you need to leave it in the hotel room, lock it in the in-room safe before departing.

3. Back Up Data

During your travels, you may need to use public or unsecured internet connections. These connections can make your device more vulnerable to security breaches and cyberattacks.

It's always a good idea to back up your data before leaving home. Use an external hard drive, USB, or cloud storage service to copy and save your files to a different location. This way, your data will be safe and easily retrievable, if necessary, and you can avoid laptop repairs that would be needed in the event of a security failure.
