Laptops are becoming more and more powerful every year, and some models can even handle resource-intensive games or video editing. However, mobile devices don’t disperse heat as well as desktops, so laptops often overheat. If your device is constantly running hot, below are a few tips for cooling down your computer and preventing expensive laptop repairs.

How to Cool Down Your Laptop

1. Use a Laptop Cooler

Laptops are too small to have built-in fans to dispel heat. Cooling pads make up for this lack with small fans attached to a small stand or tray. By keeping air flowing around the computer, these relatively inexpensive accessories can help reduce temperatures during long gaming sessions or editing projects.

2. Clean the Vents

If the air vents on your laptop are clogged, even a fan might not be able to keep it cool. Cleaning out any dust or other debris with a toothbrush will promote better airflow and help keep the computer cool. You should also avoid putting the device on your lap, a tablecloth, or any other fabric that might obstruct the vents.

3. Adjust the Settings

The settings of your laptop can have a major impact on its power consumption, and therefore, the operating temperature. If your computer is still overheating, try turning down the screen brightness and unplugging any peripherals you aren’t using. Closing resource-hungry programs you don’t need will also take pressure off of the CPU.

4. Shut Down the Computer

If nothing else is working or you’ve been using your computer in a hot environment, you may need to simply give it a break. Shut it off, and wait a few hours before turning it back on. If possible, avoid running the same programs in the same conditions when the laptop has cooled off.

5. Avoid Overcharging the Laptop

When devices are drawing power, the battery will naturally heat up. If you’re running into consistent heating issues, try to charge your laptop only at night or when you’re finished using it. In addition to controlling your laptop temperatures, this will help extend the life of your battery. However, if your device constantly heats up when it’s being charged, you may need to take it to a laptop repair professional.
