Whether it’s at home or the office, printers are an invaluable tool for creating and sharing content. There are three main types: inkjet, laser, and solid-ink, and each works a little differently. Understanding how each one works and its benefits can help if you’re looking for a new product and compatible cartridges. Below is a comprehensive guide.
A Guide to Printers & How They Work
Inkjet
Inkjet devices use a large, perforated printer head to transfer images. These contain thousands of small holes—usually thinner than a strand of hair—that deliver small quantities of colored liquid ink to the paper. These are drawn from compatible cartridges as the paper passes through the printer vertically. At the same time, the printer head passes horizontally and is activated by heat. The printer knows when and where to deposit the ink based on image data transferred from the computer.
These affordable printers are known for their vivid, photo-quality productions. They’re quiet and print quickly, which is why they’re popular in offices. Know that the ink is more sensitive to water and may bleed if you don’t use the right paper for heavily colored images.
Laser
Laser printers deliver a toner powder rather than ink. A laser or LED projects the image onto a large drum. Toner is then drawn to certain areas of the drum based on a variable electrical charge. Reverse charges may then remove toner from specific areas to create the printed image. Paper is fed to the drum, and the toner is pressed into it to transfer the image. A hot roller melts the toner so it sticks to the page, and the image is then complete.
These printers work faster than inkjet because the laser system transmits data faster and more precisely. Compatible toner cartridges last longer and are cheaper than ink. These aren’t ideal for photographs, however, and may instead be used for presentation materials and word docs.
Solid-Ink
Solid-ink printers are only manufactured by Xerox™ and combine the perks of laser and inkjet printers. Rather than toner of ink, these project wax onto a large drum with a print head. It melts and hardens onto the page to complete the image transfer. While less common, these produce some of the most vibrant colors and are recommended for professional marketing and graphic design content.
