Dance classes are a fun way for kids to make new friends, stay active, and develop flexibility and coordination. When your child is preparing for their first class, there is a dress code they should follow to obtain a full range of motion. Here’s what your little dancer needs for their lessons.

3 Ways to Dress Your Child for Dance Classes

1. Appropriate Shoes

Footwear is an integral part of dance, so it’s important to bring the right shoes. The type of shoes you’ll need depends on the dance classes your child is attending. For instance, ballet shoes are required for ballet, jazz shoes for jazz, and tap shoes for tap dancing. Make sure to have your child fitted comfortably with the correct shoes before their first lesson.

2. Proper Dancewear

dance classesMaking sure your child is in the right dancewear will allow your child to stretch and move as necessary. In most cases, a leotard and tights are the most appropriate attire. Some dance classes, like hip-hop and tap, offer a choice between tights and dance pants, whereas skirts and tutus are suitable for ballet lessons. Check with the dance studio to see the dress code for your child’s class beforehand.

3. Street Clothes

Make sure to also have a change of clothes for your child to wear before and after dance classes to keep their dance clothes clean and to keep them comfortable and warm. Your child should also have two pairs of shoes—the appropriate dance shoes and a casual pair to wear before and after class to keep the dance shoes and the studio floors clean.
