Selling scrap metal provides an eco-friendly way to make extra cash. The practice reduces metal mining, prevents unnecessary waste from entering landfills, and provides dozens of reuse possibilities. If you’re wondering where to find scrap metal, start with your home. There are many places around the house and yard for procuring scrap that metal recycling facilities want.

4 Places to Find Scrap Metal in & Around Your House

1. Kitchen

Look to your kitchen for copper, one of the most coveted scrap metals, because of its durability and versatility. Perhaps you have a copper sink that will get replaced during an upcoming remodeling project or copper piping and wiring to scrap. If your kitchen features brass, such as brass sink fixtures, they are also worth money. Aluminum pots and pans provide fast cash sources too.

2. Bathroom

Consider scrapping any brass fixtures in your bathroom, as well as copper plumbing. You can also scrap applicable metal shelving, such as shower caddies, toothbrush and soap holders, and toiletry shelves made of brass, copper, or aluminum. If brass faucets contain plastic pieces, remove them to fetch a higher price. Metal recycling facilities generally pay more for bare scrap because they don’t have to spend time and labor stripping it.

3. Backyard

Find recyclable metal around your property, such as old aluminum or copper gutters, iron patio furniture and fencing, and iron gardening tools. An aluminum swing set also provides a source of scrap, as do any garden decor items made of copper, brass, aluminum, or iron, such as a copper birdbath.

4. Living Room

Sell the aluminum from lamp bases or window frames. Electronic waste such as old power strips, televisions, cables, mini transformers, and computers contain copper wiring. If your living room features a window air conditioner that needs replacing, remove its copper or aluminum tubing before recycling plastic components.

If you find yourself with extra scrap metal during your decluttering or remodeling project, sell it to Holmes Iron & Metal Inc., the metal recycling facility serving North Carolina since 1950.
