Recycling scrap metal is a great way to get rid of unwanted materials while also earning some extra cash. However, there are a few missteps that many people make while preparing to go to a metal recycling facility that can put their safety at risk and make it harder to get as much cash as they expect. Here are some common issues you should try to avoid.

What Not to Do When Selling Scrap Metal for Recycling

1. Not Wearing Safety Gear

Going through scrap metal may seem straightforward, but there's a real risk of injury. Jagged edges can scratch or puncture your skin—and if there's any rust, the injury could easily become infected. Wear sturdy gloves, puncture-resistant pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and goggles to reduce the risk of getting hurt.

2. Not Separating Metals

Different metals have different values. If you separate your materials so that each individual metal is priced appropriately, you have a much better chance of getting the maximum value for it.

Use a magnet to identify ferrous metals like steel and iron, which will stick to the magnet. Non-ferrous metals (which won’t stick to the magnet) typically have a higher value. Using a magnet will speed up scrap organization.

Be aware of any extra preparation that some types of metal may need. For example, insulated copper wire should be stripped of insulation before it's recycled.

3. Going to a Facility That Doesn’t Accept Your Scrap Metal

Scrap metal facilities don’t necessarily accept every type of metal. Before you take your haul to the closest facility, call ahead or check their website to verify that they accept the materials you have. This will keep you from wasting gas on unnecessary trips.
