If your home isn’t located within a short walk of your child’s school, you may commit to driving them every day. For many parents, however, this isn't a viable option. While public schools have those classic yellow buses to transfer students using taxpayer funds, charter schools need to pay for transportation. Here's a closer look at charter bus rentals and their benefits.

Why Should Charter Schools Rent Charter Buses?

While public school students are assigned a school based on the district they live in, parents can apply to charter schools far from their homes. That’s why it’s important for charter institutions to rent buses that can safely transport their students across towns and even counties.

If an area's local public school has a low rating, easy access to reliable transportation will allow more students to enroll in a quality charter school. In addition to increasing accessibility, charter buses can be used to transport students for field trips and other school events. They’re often safer and more comfortable than traditional school buses, which is perfect for longer trips.

Are There Legal Considerations?

Unlike public schools, it’s up to the charter school to procure their own bus rentals. Many states don’t have any regulations in place when it comes to hiring this service, but 16 of them do.

For example, in Minnesota, charter schools are not required to provide transportation for students who live outside the school district. For those who live within it, the school can elect to provide their own transportation services, and they must notify the parents and the school district of their decision.

If parents outside the district need to transport their children to school themselves but are at or below the federal poverty level, the charter school must reimburse them for the money they spend on transportation to the district’s border. If the charter school doesn’t procure a bus rental, the school district will provide their own transportation for local students.
