Vacationing in West Virginia means that you can enjoy some fantastic opportunities to engage with nature. From your choice of scenic lodging to beautiful hikes to thrilling fish competitions, there is never a shortage of fun experiences.  Below is a breakdown of some excellent upcoming fishing opportunities.

WV Gold Rush

lodging

The WV Gold Rush fishing competition is in its fourth year and runs from March 29th to April 9th. The WVDNR releases 50,000 golden rainbow trout into streams and lakes near state park areas during this event. It encourages people to explore West Virginia's natural areas while also having the chance to win exciting prizes for catching tagged trout. The tagged trout make up 100 of the released fish, and awards include paid lodging at cabins, merchandise, and gift cards. Even if you don't catch a tagged fish, golden rainbow trout are slightly harder to capture and make beautiful trophies in their own right.

One aspect to note: if you are 15 years or older, you need a West Virginia fishing license with a valid trout stamp to participate in the competition. Licenses and stamps should be purchased ahead of time, and you do need to carry some form of identification with you in addition.

Fishing Spots

If a competition is less of your ideal, don't worry. Beautiful fishing spots and nature trails are easy to find throughout the area. Some perfect places to fish include Seneca Lake, Knapps Creek, Williams River, and Greenbriar River. If you're interested in engaging in something more intensely athletic, Greenbriar River is also the site of the Great Greenbriar River Race, which is a triathlon held the last Saturday in April.

If you are ready to fish and looking for peaceful and beautiful lodging, book a stay with Jerico Bed & Breakfast and Pre-Civil War Log Cabins in Marlinton, WV. The cabins from the 1800s have been authentically restored to provide unique and architecturally-stunning lodging. Call 1-888-499-6241 to book a room or visit their website for more information.
