Do’s and Don’ts for Taking Your Dog on a Hike
If you enjoy hiking on vacation, you’ve probably thought of bringing your dog with you on your adventure. Although this can be a beneficial way to get your furry best friend exercising, there are certain precautions you must keep in mind. Here are some tips for bringing your pet on the journey with you.
Do:
Check dog regulations before you hike.
Some hiking trails don’t allow dogs, and most don’t allow them off of their leashes. Make sure you check the rules online before you begin, and follow the guidelines when you go. If a trail doesn’t allow pups, simply find a different one that suits your needs.
Carry lots of water.
Both humans and dogs need to stay hydrated during a hike. Since dogs don’t sweat, they can be prone to heat strokes if the weather is warm.
Stop regularly and let your dog drink from a portable bowl or water bottle. If your vacation destination is near water, make sure your dog doesn’t drink from any streams or lakes. These areas can contain bacteria or parasites that could make your pup sick.
Don’t
Forget additional supplies.
You need to carry a few extra things on vacation if you want to bring your dog for a hike. One is a pet first aid kit. Include gauze, an instant cold pack, gloves, hydrogen peroxide, and anything else you think might help your dog in an emergency.
You’ll also need your dog’s leash, collar, food, bowls to eat and drink from, and dog sunscreen. If you don’t have room in your pack, you can purchase a doggy backpack so they can carry their own supplies.
Leave any waste behind.
Make sure you bring doggy waste bags with you on your hike. Even though you’re out in nature, someone could step on your dog’s waste, or it might make animals sick. Use a plastic bag to pick up any feces and carry it with you if you can’t find a garbage can.
