A toothache is the first indicator that something isn’t right with your teeth or gums. As such, it's best to never ignore this discomfort. Instead, schedule an appointment with your dentist to get to the root of the problem. Before the appointment, consult this guide to learn why your tooth may be hurting and what treatment to expect.

What Are the Common Causes of Toothaches?

Tooth Decay

Most often, tooth decay—also known as a cavity—is responsible for this pain. These are holes that form on the tooth after acids in plaque erode its protective enamel layer. If left untreated, the holes will gradually get bigger, and eventually, you will develop a toothache. This particular type of ache will be felt near the affected tooth, including the gums. Painful sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks is also common.

Abscessed Tooth

If tooth decay is allowed to worsen, an abscess—a pocket of pus—can form. This infection, which affects the tooth and inner pulp layer, can cause moderate to severe pain, which can sometimes radiate to your ear or neck.

Impacted Tooth

Sometimes, a toothache may be caused by an impacted tooth — a tooth, usually wisdom, that is stuck in the gum tissue or bone. Consequently, the tooth may start to grow in the wrong direction, leading to pain when opening your mouth, chewing, or biting. You might also feel jaw pain, and your gums may become red, swollen, and bleed.

What Is the Proper Treatment?

A toothache often requires a trip to the dentist. Before the appointment, take ibuprofen or another pain reliever to ease the discomfort. The dentist will have to take an X-ray to get a clear visual of the problem.

If you have an infection, an antibiotic may be prescribed. For a cavity, the decay will be removed with a drill and a filling will be added to restore the structural integrity of the tooth. If you have an impacted tooth, surgical removal may be necessary.
