Invisalign® is a popular modern alternative to traditional metal braces because it's far less visible on the teeth and can be removed easily to eat, brush, and floss. However, as with any orthodontic treatment, overall effectiveness depends on proper maintenance. Failure to keep your trays clean could affect progress and have a negative impact on your oral health. Here's a look at how to keep Invisalign trays in excellent condition—and what to avoid.

Do:

Clean trays whenever brushing your teeth.

It's important to brush your teeth at least twice a day, and your Invisalign trays should be cleaned just as frequently. Douse the trays with denture or retainer cleaning formula and gently brush them with a small amount of toothpaste.

After cleaning, soak them in Invisalign crystal cleaning solution. Once the soaking is complete, brush off any remaining residue and run the trays under water before placing them back in your mouth.

Remove stains with appropriate methods.

Over time, you may begin to see mild staining or discoloration on your trays. This is especially likely if you're a regular coffee or tea drinker. To remove stains, fill a small bowl with hydrogen peroxide and warm water and soak the trays overnight.

You could also try soaking them in equal parts vinegar and water for about half an hour. Another effective method is scrubbing them gently with a toothbrush and baking soda.

Don't:

Eat or drink while wearing trays.

While wearing Invisalign, avoid eating meals or drinking anything besides water. Food and drinks leave stains, and food particles can damage the product.

Additionally, the force of your teeth while chewing may break or crack them. Once you're finished eating, brush and floss your teeth, if possible, before putting your liners back in.

Leave trays out in the open air.

It's important to store liners in a protective case when not in use. Leaving them exposed to air allows bacteria to grow, which can lead to damage and illness. If you forget to store your trays, clean and soak them before wearing them. When you receive a new set, keep it stored in a cool, dry location until it's time to replace your current pair.
