Getting the tires replaced is one of the most common and easiest auto maintenance tasks for car owners. According to auto professionals, tires should ideally be replaced once every six years. However, certain circumstances may require you to get your tires replaced sooner. Here are three signs that your car might need some new wheels.

3 Signs That It's Time to Replace Your Tires

1. Low Tread

If any of your tires' treading shows signs of wear, it's time to get replacements. Though regular tire rotation will extend the life of your tires by putting those with more tread at the front of the car, eventually, the wheels will run out of enough traction to navigate the road safely. During monthly auto maintenance, measure the amount of tread left on your tires. Take a penny and, holding it upside down, place it in the lowest areas of tread on your tire. If you can still see the top of Abe Lincoln's head, it's time to get new tires.

2. Cracked Rubber

If you have older tires, you may notice cracks in the rubber sidewalls while performing regular auto maintenance. Your tires' rubber will naturally lose flexibility due to UV light exposure, oils, chemicals, and other elements commonly found on the road. Once the rubber's flexibility declines, it'll begin to disintegrate. The best practice is to have your tires evaluated and replaced when you start to notice small cracks.

3. Unusual Noise or Vibrations

Sometimes, even if your tires look fine on the outside, you may hear unusual noises or vibrations. These signs may indicate a problem with the tire itself, such as an under-filled or uneven air distribution. However, they can also signify issues with the car's alignment. If you notice wobbling or excessive vibrations, reach out to an auto mechanic as soon as possible to have the issue corrected.
