If you have a wood-burning stove, you'll frequently have to start fires to keep your home warm. You won't want to waste time or create hazards by trying to burn firewood that isn't suitable for your stove. This guide describes the best types of wood to use in wood-burning stoves.

3 Types of Wood to Use in Wood-Burning Stoves

1. Hardwoods

Hardwoods such as oak, maple, hickory, and ash are ideal for a wood-burning stove. These types of wood are dense, which means they burn longer and hotter than softer alternatives. They also produce less creosote, a flammable residue that can build up in your chimney and cause a fire.

It is worth noting that, regardless of what wood type you use, regular chimney sweeps are essential for keeping your stove safe. Chimney sweeps clear out creosote and other buildup to reduce the risk of fire.

2. Softwoods

Softwoods like pine, fir, and spruce are not as dense as hardwoods, but they are still a good choice for your wood-burning stove. They are easier to light and produce more heat than hardwoods, so they're good to use at times when you're in a hurry to warm up your home. However, they burn faster, so you'll need more logs on hand to keep feeding the fire. They can also produce more creosote.

3. Seasoned Firewood

Regardless of wood type, you should only use seasoned firewood. Seasoned wood has been cut, split, and then left to dry for at least six months. Seasoned firewood burns hotter and cleaner than green or fresh wood. Fresh wood can produce more smoke and creosote, which can be dangerous for your stove and chimney.

It won't burn as hot or as consistently, either, so it will be a struggle to keep your fire going and the fire may produce an excessive amount of smoke. Wood-burning stoves perform best when you use seasoned wood.
