If you own a lawn mower, you know how important it is to keep it in good condition. Routine maintenance can help your equipment last longer and ensure smooth operation every time you need to use it. Here are some ways to maintain your mower to keep it in tip-top shape.

How to Care for Your Lawn Mower

1. Sharpen the Blades

Dull blades can damage your lawn, tearing the tips of the grass and making it more susceptible to disease. They can also force your motor to work harder to rotate the blades. Sharpen the blades of your mower at least annually or more often if you have a large yard. You can do this yourself with a sharpening stone or take it to a professional.

2. Change the Oil

Changing the oil in your lawn mower is important to keep it running smoothly. Old oil can become thick and clog the engine, which can cause it to malfunction. Fresh oil lubricates moving parts and improves fuel economy. Depending on if you have a push or riding mower, you should change the fluid every 50 to 100 hours of use or at least once a year.

3. Replace the Air Filter

The air filter in your mower prevents dirt and debris from getting into the engine. Over time, this piece can become clogged and limit airflow, which can cause the engine to run poorly. Reduced horsepower and hearing strange noises are just a couple of signs you may need a replacement. Change the filter in your equipment every year or more often if you have a large lawn.

4. Clean the Deck

The lawn mower's deck is where the blades are located. Grass clippings, weeds, and other debris can build up in this area and clog the blades, which can cause them to stop working and even corrode the interior of your equipment. Wipe the mower deck after every use to keep it in good condition.

5. Switch Out the Spark Plugs

Spark plugs ignite the fuel in your lawn mower's engine, which gets the machine going. They can become dirty or worn with use, which can cause the engine to run roughly or not start at all. They may need to be changed every 100 hours or annually, depending on what type of mower you have and how often you use it. Refer to your owner’s manual to determine when it’s time to buy new ones.
