A Few Social & Emotional Benefits of Dance
Building Confidence
Dance classes build self-esteem. As students learn a new skill or practice a routine step, they experience multilayered social support and positive encouragement from not only their instructor, but peers as well. As they continue to show up for class, they can see that their hard work has paid off with improved skills. The annual end of year recital and a variety of parent observation days throughout the year provides an opportunity to showcase their hard work! Allegro’s progressive curriculum enhances social and emotional learning, as well as physical development as the year progresses. Students receive positive feedback & constructive feedback, which builds confidence and encourages them to put effort into other things—such as school!
Boosting Mood
A strong correlation has been found between exercise and elevation in mood. When dancers get moving, their heart rate rises, and the brain receives a sudden influx of blood and oxygen. This supports the release of neurotransmitters such as endorphins and serotonin. These hormones naturally boost the mood and help the body regulate sleep. Especially during these days of isolation, dancers report feeling more connected and less alone after dance class. The long-term benefits of relationships formed through dance classes might just be as valuable (if not more) than the steps themselves.
Expression of Emotions
Dance provides plenty of opportunity for self-expression and creativity. This encourages the dancer to connect with their innermost selves, expressing emotions that they otherwise might have difficulty communicating. We know that during isolation, children are likely to experience an increase in feelings of anxiety, sadness, and loneliness. Giving students an outlet for emotional expression, combined with the human connection and physical release of the exercise has an everlasting positive impact on the dancer. After 30 years in dance education, we’re certain that emotional expression is one of the very best benefits of participating in dance!
