5 Reasons Adults Benefit From Ballet

1. Strengthens Muscles

Muscle mass naturally decreases with age but can be maintained with regular strength training exercises. Ballet requires using bodyweight to move into different positions without stressing the joints, allowing adults to avoid muscular atrophy problems. It has even been shown to lessen muscle rigidity in people with Parkinson’s disease.

2. Improves Memory

Studies show that dancing helps fight dementia and otherwise improves memory. Not only does ballet and all other forms of dancing require remembering steps, movements, and positions, there’s evidence that aerobic activity can override shrinking of the hippocampus. The part of the brain that controls memory, the hippocampus shrinks as people get older.

3. Provides Social, Connective Opportunities

Whether you enjoy talking to classmates before or after the class, you’ll likely enjoy interacting with new people and making new friends. Socialization keeps the brain active and can prevent depression.
