Dogs tend to love playing in the snow, especially for the first time. However, it is important to make sure that the experience is a safe and comfortable one that will keep both of you wanting to come back for more fun. The following guide outlines some top pet care tips to ensure your dog remains happy and healthy while romping around outside in snow and cold weather.

A Guide to Winter Safety Tips for Dog Owners

1. Keep Vet Records On Hand

If you often travel out of town around the holidays with or without your dog, you should make sure you have his or her vet records handy. If an incident with another dog or person occurs, it may become necessary to show proof that you've practiced responsible pet care and secured all vaccinations. Dog parks, doggy day care centers, and other dog-centered venues often require proof of a rabies vaccination to enter, as well.

2. Assess Breed Traits

Some types of dogs were specifically bred to withstand extremely low temperatures and deep snow. These are known as northern, arctic, or snow breeds, and they include Alaskan and Siberian Huskies, Alaskan malamutes, and Samoyeds.

If your dog belongs to this breed group, you don't have much to worry about the time they spend in the snow. His or her thick double coat is all the warmth they'll need to stay comfortable. If you have a very short-haired breed, like a Boxer, or your dog is short in stature, consider bundling them up in a warm, waterproof coat before heading outdoors for lengthy periods.

3. Provide Paw Protection

Snow and ice can take a toll on your dog's paw pads. The effect of the rock salt used on the streets and sidewalks can also be problematic, causing severe skin irritation for some pups. Avoid issues by purchasing snow boots for your furry friend. If you don't think they will tolerate them, thoroughly wipe their paws after walking outside in the winter. Regularly apply wax or balm to all pads to seal in moisture and protect from frostbite, dry skin, and salt exposure.
