Your dog offers constant companionship and unconditional love. However, even well-behaved pets can damage hardwood flooring over time. Here are a few ways to protect the surface from your pup.

How to Safeguard Hardwood Flooring When You're a Dog Owner

1. Area Rugs

Placing area rugs in your living spaces adds warmth and visual interest to your interior design. They also offer soft layers of protection that keep your feet cozy and protect your hardwood flooring from your dog playing and napping throughout the day. You can also place rugs under furniture legs to keep the pieces from scratching or denting your floor.

2. Dog Booties

During inclement weather, dogs can track moisture and mud into your home after a walk. The fluid and dirt can stain or warp your floors, resulting in the need for premature hardwood floor refinishing. Wiping down your pet's paws after each walk or getting your pet dog booties to wear in the rain can reduce the amount of debris they bring inside.

3. Trim Nails

Trimming your dog's nails on a regular basis—ideally, once every two weeks—can prevent them from accidentally scratching and denting floors when they walk or run inside the house. Plus, you won't hear the sound of nails scraping or tapping the hardwood as they move around.

4. Clean & Wax Regularly

Sweep or vacuum your floors on a regular basis—daily for high-traffic areas like the kitchen—to keep the surface from scratching. If your dog has an accident, wipe it up immediately to prevent stains from forming on the hardwood. Waxing and sealcoating the surface can add an extra layer of protection and a beautiful shine.
