Almost every construction project depends on hard, properly compacted soil. Compaction equipment uses mechanical activity to crush the ground, creating more stable surfaces for paving and pouring foundations. If you’re planning a construction project, here are a few of the most common types of compaction equipment you might need.

What Are the Different Types of Compaction Equipment?

1. Rammers

Rammers are small, manual compaction machines operated by an electric or diesel engine. These devices feature two pistons which transfer energy to a plate at the bottom. The plates have a slight forward angle, which drives the rammer forward with each bounce.

As the rammer’s plates impact the ground, intense vibrations travel beneath the surface to shake out air pockets and compact the soil. Because these tools are light and maneuverable, they’re often used to compact small areas like walkways and patios.

2. Vibratory Plates

Vibratory plate compactors are similar to rammers. While these devices are also best suited for small areas, vibratory plates are often used on different types of equipment.

Vibratory plates oscillate at higher frequencies with lower amplitude. This makes them best for sandy soils, which can be more difficult to compact.

3. Smooth Wheeled Rollers

For larger areas, you may need a smooth-wheeled roller. Many manufacturers produce walk-behind models, but most contractors use large ride-on designs.

Smooth rollers are typically used to prepare soil for paving parking lots, roads, and driveways. These static devices are typically best for softer, sandier soils.

4. Vibratory Rollers

Similar to smooth-wheeled rollers, vibrator rollers have a large drum that compacts the soil as it rolls. However, the drums of these machines steadily vibrate, combining static and vibratory forces.

The combination of these forces makes vibratory rollers effective in a wide range of applications. Contractors typically use these types of compaction equipment for granular or medium-type soil.
