It’s normal for insects to come out in droves during the summer months. This year, however, brings a distinct increase in diseased mosquitoes throughout the country due to the increase in rainy weather and higher temperatures. The conditions are right for these unwelcome pests to breed, making everyone more vulnerable to their bites. While it’s imperative to contact a technician for pest control, there are steps you can take to protect yourself, too. Here’s what you should know.

Why Are Mosquitoes So Prevalent This Year?

Summer naturally brings the return of mosquitoes. However, their increase this year means people must be on greater alert. The insect is responsible for spreading a number of diseases, including West Nile, malaria, yellow fever, and dengue, among many others. Mosquitoes are naturally drawn to water, which is why any type of moist environment automatically increases their number.

In Southern California, that’s of particular concern. Swimming pools alone attract thousands of mosquitoes weekly because they’re drawn to sources of standing water. That, coupled with a spike in rainy conditions and excessive heat, has aggravated the problem. Diseased mosquitoes in particular are more invasive, with some that tend to bite more frequently at sunset and others more eager to draw blood during the day.

What Can You Do to Avoid Their Bite?

First, take note of a sudden increase in mosquito bites. If you experience this, it’s likely because they’ve found a friendly water source in your vicinity. They won’t leave on their own unless you can identify and eliminate the source in its entirety. Otherwise, you’re better off having a technician locate and control the problem so it doesn’t get out of hand.

You should also limit your time outside. When you do step out, apply insect repellent and wear long sleeves and pants to protect your skin. Try to avoid going outside between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are at their most active. If you have damaged windows or torn window screens, repair them promptly to prevent pests from making their way inside.
