Consistently warm weather is one of the reasons people flock to Southern California. But with so much beautiful weather, you'll also encounter more insects, some of which can deliver painful stings and bites. While a pest control company can help ward off infestations, you may still deal with a few of these critters. Take a look at the most common ones you'll see this season.

Summer Bugs to Watch Out for in Southern California

1. Bees

Bees look for tight, shady spaces to build their hives. While they aren’t intentionally aggressive, they will swarm and sting to defend their home. Start by replacing flowers and plants that attract bees, like clovers and honeysuckles. Next, remove nesting spots. Cover the chimneys and grates and fill holes in exterior wood. You can also sprinkle crushed garlic, cucumber peels, and peppermint around outdoor spaces as a DIY pest control solution.

2. Wasps

Wasps, like bees, deliver a painful sting. They’re attracted to fruit trees, brightly colored flowers, and food, which is why they often show up to barbecues. Keep them away by always cleaning up food outside. Peppermint oil, soapy water, and lemongrass can be effective for keeping these pests away.

3. Ants

Ants march in looking for food and water sources. They’ll then build their mound nearby. Whether alone or in bunches, they deliver painful bites, so always pick up trash, make sure water doesn't pool near the house, and fix leaky pipes. There are several organic deterrents like cayenne pepper and ground cinnamon that will keep these pests away from your home.

4. Spiders

Spiders come in many sizes and shapes. Some, like the black widow, are highly poisonous, while others are harmless. Like many insects, spiders are attracted to light and food. Even though they seem like a nuisance, they're actually a natural form of pest control because they capture and eat small insects. If you’re concerned about bites, however, plant lavender, eucalyptus, and citronella. Spiders won’t tolerate their strong smells and will nest elsewhere.

5. Ticks

Tick bites don’t necessarily hurt, but they do create health complications. These small pests carry Lyme disease, which can cause heart problems, inflammation, and painful rashes. You’ll often find them in tall grass and brush. Mow your lawn every week and remove brush piles from your property.
