Choosing to enroll your child in ballet classes is exciting for both you and them. Ballet is an opportunity for them to learn new skills, express themselves, exercise, and make new friends. To make sure they have everything they need for class, below is a helpful guide.

What Gear Is Necessary for a First Ballet Class?

1. Shoes

A leather ballet slipper with elastic is a ballet class basic. Find out from the studio if a certain color is required; usually little ones get pink slippers, while older kids may get to choose black or a different color. Shoes might be available through the studio or online.

2. Leotard & Tights

ballet-classesCheck with the studio for guidelines on what style and colors are appropriate for their leotard and tights. Many teachers like all the children to look the same, especially in younger kids’ classes. A black leotard with short or long sleeves and pink tights are standard. Camisole or tank versions may be acceptable as well. Preview a ballet class if possible to see what others are wearing.

3. Accessories

A warm-up shrug or light wrap top, leg warmers, and a wrap ballet skirt may be worn to class too. Also, learn the hair policy for the class, and get hair accessories for your child accordingly. Don’t forget a water bottle, so your ballerina will stay hydrated.

4. Dance Bag

If you foresee your child taking multiple classes, a dedicated dance bag may be a smart investment. These bags have pockets for shoes and clothes, as well as separate areas for make-up and costumes. More elaborate dance bags even have collapsible garment racks for competition or performance use. For beginners, however, a basic duffel is perfect for storing gear when the child isn’t in class.
