Using a tiny network of circuits and transmitters, the fob on your car keys makes it easy to lock and unlock your vehicle remotely, as well as get the engine started. However, if this essential device gets wet, damage to the inner components could leave you without a way to access your vehicle. Before you call an auto locksmith to replace the device, follow these steps to dry out a wet key fob.

5 Steps to Save a Wet Key Fob

1. Drain Immediately

Remove the key fob from the source of water immediately before it becomes permanently damaged. Wipe the device dry with a cloth and gently shake it to remove trapped moisture. Next, place it button-side down on a dry rag so that gravity will remove the moisture.

2. Open the Casing

Once the key fob is no longer wet, test it. If it’s still inoperable, use a coin or screwdriver to open the device. Most fobs should have small slots or screws on the side to open the casing.

3. Remove the Battery

Remove and safely discard the battery from the key fob. Wear gloves as it may leak harmful battery acid. While you’ll need a replacement battery, you shouldn’t insert it yet.

4. Gently Wipe & Wait

Dip a cotton swab in isopropyl alcohol and use it to wipe the surfaces, making sure to clean circuits and battery contacts. After all the parts appear dry, test the buttons. If they aren’t working properly, seal the key fob in a plastic bag with spare silica packets, or place the device in a warm, dry area. Wait a few days so the moisture can completely evaporate.

5. Test It Out

At this point, you can tell if your key fob is operating. Replace the battery, close the casing, and test out all buttons. You may need to reprogram the key fob so that it pairs successfully with the vehicle. If the device no longer works, you’ll need to get a replacement.
