Removing a tooth is a common procedure. However, extraction leaves the mouth in a sensitive state, so proper at-home care is necessary to avoid complications. Here are several tips to follow after your tooth extraction.

What to Do Following a Tooth Extraction

1. Rest

Resting with your head elevated helps minimize bleeding at the extraction site. Over time, the area will develop a healthy clot that promotes healing and reduces the risk of complications. Take a day or two off work and designate someone to handle household duties and errands for at least 24 hours. Strenuous activity could cause the blood clot on the surgical site to dislodge, resulting in a painful dry socket, a condition that requires an immediate trip to the dentist.

2. Rinse, Compress & Manage Pain

There can be some discomfort once the anesthesia wears off. Manage the pain with over-the-counter medication or a prescription from your dentist. You can control swelling by applying a cold compress to your cheek at 15-minute intervals. Keep the site clean to avoid infection. After 24 hours, start swishing a saline rinse or warm saltwater in your mouth.

3. Protect the Clot

Sucking, blowing, or spitting may pull the blood clot from the surgical site, so avoid these actions. Try not to sneeze, and avoid smoking. Soft foods like smoothies and soups won’t apply much pressure on the area but don’t drink through a straw. It usually takes 24 hours for the blood clot to secure, but play it safe by avoiding these stressors for another day or two.
