Do's & Don'ts for Speaking Into a Microphone
Public speaking ranks as a major fear for many people, and the worry that you feel can hinder your ability to give a compelling speech. To speak as clearly and confidently as possible, you must become comfortable with the sound equipment you'll be using. After all, a microphone is vital for amplifying your message, but misusing it could make your voice even harder to hear. If you have a big speech coming up, review the following tips to get yourself ready.
Do:
Test the mic.
You don't want to get halfway through your snappy speech opening only to realize the audience can't hear you. Before you get on stage, double-check that the mic is on and charged. Also, before launching into your speech, start with "Testing 1, 2, 3" and wait for a reaction from the audience.
Understand the mic you’re using.
Depending on the setting you're presenting in, you might have a lapel, podium, or handheld mic. While they're functionally similar, each option requires some adjustment.
When moving a podium mic, avoid touching the head, or you'll treat the audience to noisy feedback. Also, stand back and don't speak directly into it. A lapel mic clips to your clothing and allows relative freedom of movement, but you shouldn't turn your head too far from it. Finally, handheld mics should be held a few inches away from your face, pointed to your nose so you're speaking across it rather than down into it.
Don’t:
Cough into the mic.
No one wants to hear the sudden burst of static that happens when you cough or sneeze into a microphone. If you have to, hold the microphone away from you and sneeze or cough in the opposite direction. Your audience won't judge you for coughing, and they'll thank you for saving their ears.
Panic if there’s a problem.
Whether the microphone runs out of battery in the middle of your speech or starts cutting in and out, sound equipment issues may occur. Maintain a level head, so you can speak calmly when the problem is resolved. If the event has a sound technician, they'll be able to fix it so you can continue your speech. If not, attempt to correct the issue or switch to a backup system.
