Spiders, spiderwebs, and insects obstructing security camera views are common problems. These insects and arachnids also create issues via false motion detection, often making you think there is a problem when there isn’t. Insects are attracted to the LED lights on these cameras, which attract spiders looking for food. To make your security cameras less appealing to these creatures, review the following tips.

4 Ways to Keep Insects Away From Your Security Cameras

1. Turn Off the Camera Lights

Some cameras allow you to disable their standard or EXIR IR LED lights. If yours are among these cameras, turn off the lights to keep insects away. Many insects are attracted to light, including beetles, cicadas, flies, earwigs, lacewings, and gnats, all of which provide spiders with sustenance. If your cameras do not allow you to disable the lights and they are older models, consider replacing them.

2. Apply a Lubricant

Spiders cannot spin webs if the applicable surfaces are slippery. Applying a lubricant to your security cameras makes them inhospitable to spiders, so use petroleum jelly, silicone, or Teflon spray. To avoid getting your chosen lubricant on the camera lens and making it cloudy, cover it with a paper towel or old cloth while spraying.

3. Use Bug Spray

A synthetic or organic bug spray keeps your security cameras from becoming insect havens. Reapply your selected product every few weeks, or more often, depending on its strength and longevity. In terms of organic sprays that repel insects, look for those containing lavender, peppermint, citrus, or eucalyptus essential oil. All of these essential oils are also repulsive to spiders.

4. Attach Dryer Sheets

Dryer sheets typically have strong scents that spiders and insects dislike. Attach these sheets to your cameras with rubber bands and replace them every three weeks since their scents eventually fade. You’ll also want to replace the sheets if they get wet, which also causes them to lose their scent.
