Theft costs American businesses a staggering $100 billion each year. A surveillance system is one of the most effective ways to deter theft and other criminal acts and to identify and apprehend suspects. To get the most out of your system, it must be set up correctly. Here are a few do's and don'ts to help you plan for—and get the most out of—your security cameras.

Do:

Position cameras in the best locations.

A comprehensive surveillance system should include multiple cameras placed in positions where they can offer a clear view of areas most vulnerable to crime. In most businesses, this means cameras at all entries and exits, points of sale like cash registers and customer service desks, and lobbies and reception areas.

Have them installed high enough that they give you an optimal vantage point—but not so high that you can't make out what's happening or track a subject's movement. Also, avoid areas with a lot of direct sunlight, as this can result in poor-quality images.

Check that the lens is focused.

An unfocused lens can mean the difference between nabbing a criminal and helping them get away. At least once a day, ideally before the business opens, do a quick check of all cameras to ensure the lenses are in focus and providing the clearest possible view. Make any adjustments as needed.

Don't:

Conceal the system.

There's no reason to be sneaky about the fact that you have security cameras. In fact, sometimes just the presence of cameras can be enough to deter criminal activity.

When people know they are being watched, they are less likely to break the law—the risk of apprehension is too great. So, don't worry about hiding the cameras; you may even want to post a sign that alerts people they are being filmed.

Go for the cheapest option.

While any business wants to save money wherever they can, a security system is not something you want to skimp on. Do your research, and talk to a security professional. This way, you can determine just what features will most benefit the business.

Select a system with plenty of helpful options, like high-quality resolutions, recording capabilities, wi-fi connectivity, and night vision. Remember: cheapest isn't always best—in fact, it rarely is.
