3 Ways to Prepare for Your Child's First Gymnastics Class
Gymnastics classes are an amazing way for your child to learn a new skill, practice discipline, and express creativity. If you’ve never been to a gymnastic class before, preparing your child for the first class isn’t difficult. Here’s what you should know.
How to Prepare for Your Child’s First Gymnastics Class
1. Dress the Part
During gymnastics classes, your child will be flipping and stretching and will need to wear clothes that will allow them to easily move. Some gymnasts opt to wear leotards for practice. However, for your first class, buying a leotard isn’t necessary. Dress your child in gym clothes, such as a pair of shorts or leggings and a t-shirt or workout tank top.
If your child has long hair, it will need to be tied back and out of the face. You can do this with a ponytail or a braid.
2. Bring a Water Bottle
During gymnastics classes, your child will be given water breaks. Gymnastics takes a lot of hard, physical work and your child will work up a thirst. Always bring a water bottle to class so that your child can get a drink when she needs to.
3. Ease Your Child’s Nerves
Gymnastics is a fun sport. However, it’s not uncommon for a child to feel some anxiety before a first class. After all, there is a lot to take in when you first walk into a gymnastics studio.
Assure your child that they will not be expected to already know what to do. Beginner gymnastics classes focus on the basics. Coaches will instruct your child and help them develop the skills they need. No previous experience is needed.
