Coin collecting is a fun pastime, giving you the thrill of chasing and finding rarities to grow your collection. This hobby can also be lucrative, as some coins command a high resale price at a pawnshop. Proper maintenance will help ensure your inventory looks its best, preserving its appearance and longevity and maintaining its value. Here's how to care for your collectibles.

3 Tips for Preserving Your Coin Collection

1. Clean Them Correctly

You shouldn't clean uncirculated pieces since abrasive products and processes can cause scratches and damage. However, circulated coins are usually already scuffed, and you can clean them to maintain their shine.

First, wash your hands to remove any dirt, then fill a plastic container with lukewarm water mixed with a drop of mild detergent. Immerse the coin, rubbing it gently between your fingers. Dunk the sudsy piece in a second container of cool, distilled water. Rinse it under hot water, swish it in the distilled liquid again to remove chlorine, then air-dry it on a clean towel.

2. Store Them Safely

Wash the coins one at a time to avoid the scuffs and scratches that occur when two metals rub. Similarly, ensure the pieces don't touch in storage.

Use special books or boxes with small pockets designed to house collectible coins. You can also get hard plastic packages, known as slabs, from collectibles stores and pawnshops. Alternatively, you can store them individually in acid-free envelopes or PVC-free plastic bags.

3. Handle Them Properly

When cleaning, storing, or handling the coins, always hold them by the edges. This technique helps prevent unsightly finger smudges on the surfaces. Otherwise, the oils from your skin will oxidize the metals, tarnishing their colors, wearing their shine, and diminishing their values.
