Stainless steel and aluminum are two of the most commonly used metals today. While each of them is quite distinct, people often mistake them for being mostly the same thing. Their differences influence their usage applications as well as demand and pricing for scrap pieces.

Stainless Steel

steelStainless steel is a combination of several different metals, including iron, nickel, and chromium. This gives it superior strength, as well as excellent corrosion resistance. Though stainless steel is easier to weld and usable at extremely high temperatures, it is a poor conductor and can be harder to shape or cut.

Stainless steel is generally stronger and more scratch-resistant than aluminum, so it’s commonly used in construction. Because stainless steel is readily available in high quantities, it is less expensive than other metals. When you have large amounts of stainless steel to dispose of, it is best to take it to a recycling facility.

Aluminum

Though not as strong as stainless steel, aluminum offers impressive strength at a much lighter weight. Aluminum becomes soft at lower temperatures than stainless steel, which makes it easier to form and cut. It’s an excellent conductor of heat and electricity and is generally corrosion-resistant.

Aluminum is frequently used in aircraft and now more regularly in truck and automobile manufacturing thanks to its lightweight properties and good strength. It usually earns a higher price-per-pound for metal recycling because of its use in more specialized manufacturing work.

Whether you have stainless steel, aluminum, or other metals that need to be recycled, you can take them to David Hirschberg Steel & Recycling Center in Cincinnati, OH.
