Many people are drawn to Hawaii adventure tours to take in the stunning coastline and towering mountains. Along the route, you’ll notice unique tropical birds that thrive in the island’s climate. Here are three you might encounter.
Which Birds Live on Maui?
1. Lovebirds
You may have seen lovebirds at a pet store. The average bird is 5 to 7 inches long and weighs about 50 grams. Its lime green body fades into a yellow and orange head, and it has red beaks and black eyes rimmed with white.
Lovebirds are from Africa, but many live in Hawaii, where they frequent bird feeders and may be aggressive to other visiting species. Keep an eye out for lovebirds in the foliage during an adventure tour. They like to live and nest in holes.
2. Cattle Egret
When driving by water, golf courses, or farms, you may spot a tall white bird with a light orange beak and long black legs called a cattle egret. It eats flies that can harass cows, hence its name. The bird is smaller than a heron, ranging from 18 to 22 inches long and weighing up to 18 pounds. Breeding age egrets may have light tan coloring on the top of their heads and breasts and back of their wings.
3. Nene Goose
You can only see the nene goose in Hawaii. This native bird can be 22 to 28 inches long and weigh up to 5 pounds. Its black face has cream-colored cheeks on top of a pale gray striped neck. The bird also has a black bill, legs, and feet with dark brown eyes.
Nene geese live on Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island and are listed as endangered due to food scarcity and habitat loss. Keep an eye out for these birds along the coasts, eating shrubs, seeds, and leaves.
