Just like there are many options of frames available to fit each person’s unique style, there are also different types of lenses to correct specific vision needs. Single-vision lenses contain one prescription to address either nearsightedness or farsightedness, and combine multiple prescriptions to fix both issues at once. As people age, it’s common to experience vision changes. While this transition can be challenging at first, here are a few tips to help you adjust. A bifocal has a line with two visual ranges whereas a multifocal has multiple visual ranges.

How to Get Used to Wearing Multifocals

1. Wear Consistently

It may be tempting to switch back and forth between an old pair of glasses and new multifocals, but this will only prolong the adjustment process. Those who wear their updated lenses for an hour or two at most will often take a couple of days to fully adjust.

As such, even if they make you feel disoriented at times, it’s better to wear them all day long unless otherwise instructed by your optometrist. This allows most people to get used to their new lenses within a week.

2. Avoid Looking at the Ground

When walking, be sure to keep your eyes focused in front of you instead of on the ground. Looking through the lower portion of multifocal lenses can make things appear wavy and distorted, which will leave you feeling unsteady on your feet. It’s especially important to be conscious of this when navigating stairs to prevent a fall.

3. Ensure a Proper Fit

Before leaving your optometrist’s office, have your glasses professionally adjusted to fit your face. They should rest easily on your nose and fit comfortably on the backs of your ears. The position of your frames can make a significant difference in your ability to see clearly out of the lenses.
