A home is made up of countless materials and parts that can eventually give you problems. Double-paned windows alone are relatively complex installations with their own constituent parts. Among the smallest of these is the window seal, but even though it's a minor part, it can still let in uncomfortable drafts and have an outsized impact on your home's energy bills if it breaks due to age or excessive moisture. Here are your window repair or replacement options when you notice a broken seal.

How to Handle a Damaged Window Seal

1. Rely on the Warranty

If the window isn't very old, it's probably still under warranty. Since the problem with the seal likely involves a defective product due to its young age, you should be able to get a new window. This is because the seal alone can't replace the insulating argon gas that leaks out between the panes when the seal breaks.

2. Replace the Window

If the warranty has expired, it's wise to consider replacing the entire window due to the argon that has leaked out. This will ensure you eliminate energy loss due to reduced insulation and gradually pay for the window through the accumulation of utility savings.

3. Install a New Seal

If you'd prefer to avoid replacing the whole window, you can have a window repair specialist install a new seal for the time being. It won't restore the full insulation ability of the panes due to the missing argon, but it can tide you over until it's time to replace all the windows in the home.

4. Leave It Alone

If the warranty is expired and the damage to the seal is minor, you may decide to leave it alone for now. It's possible that you won't experience much heat loss for a year or two, and the worst consequence will be some window blurring. However, once you start to notice more extensive decay, it's best to replace the window.
