As the cooler fall weather arrives, most people think about getting cozy indoors. However, it's also a wonderful opportunity to spend time at a campground. There's no better way to appreciate the changing colors or pleasant air like being outdoors. If you're going to try it, though, remember that the cold temperatures and shorter days make it different from camping in the spring or summer. Some suggestions should make your trip safe and memorable.

3 Tips for Camping in the Fall

1. Stay Warm

Start by dressing in layers; for example, wear a sweater or light jacket over a shirt fashioned from moisture-wicking material, like wool, fleece, silk, nylon, or polyester. Use thick but comfortable pants, socks, boots, gloves, and a hat as well.

Also, bring a sleeping bag made to withstand cooler temperatures below freezing. Although the nights probably won't get that cold, it guarantees that you'll be toasty enough to sleep soundly. Bring blankets, sleeping pads, and a hot water bottle as well.

2. Be Safe & Healthy

campgroundThere are many fun activities at campgrounds in the fall, like hiking, carving pumpkins, or picking fruit or berries. If you go to a lakeside resort, you could go fishing, canoeing, or kayaking.

Whatever you do, there will still be bugs and the potential for sunburn or other injuries, so pack bug spray, sunblock, and a first aid kit. Have a headlamp just in case you're away from your campsite after dark. Never leave food out, as it could attract local wildlife.

3. Prepare Food Beforehand

With the cooler temperatures, it's important to spend as little time as possible cooking food outside. Chop up some vegetables and meat and wrap them in tin foil in advance of your trip.

You can simply warm it up over a fire, stove, or grill. A pot of chili is a wonderful option, too. Keep them in a cooler when you're not cooking them. Bring drinks that you can easily heat, too, like hot chocolate, tea, or cider.
